Tarpon: Florida Keys has started out with an incredible tarpon season. Because of the fact we basically had no winter and the water temperatures stayed warm, the tarpon have been in the Keys since early February. In the Upper Keys and Flamingo we have been catching tarpon up to 180 pounds in large numbers. I feel like it is going to be one of best tarpon seasons we have had in a long time.… Read More

Winter-time fishing in the Lower Keys and Key West means dealing with cold fronts. These cold fronts cool the water down and encourage the migration of baitfish. Once the baitfish get established, it doesn’t take long before migratory fish find them and start to feed. A cold front cooling the water actually helps the Florida reef and offshore fishing in general, but hinders the flats fishing for shallow water species… Read More

I called my friend Gary with this report about me and my friend Jason Rogers catching a 125lb tarpon the other day, and swore to my friend it would get onto the front page today :) The tarpon have really showed up in increasing numbers at all of the primary cuts we fish. These images of me and my very dear friend (and excellent angler) Jason Rogers shows him fighting what turned out to be a "One-Twenty-Five" -- a 125lb… Read More

Lower Keys-Key West Fishing Report While the rest of the country is getting blasted by cold weather down here we have 80 degree temperatures and loads of sunshine. Most locals are complaining that it is too hot! All a matter of perspective I guess. The green water and lack of current and bait on the shoals and reef have still hindered the fishing to some extent. Sailfishing has slowed but there are still tuna and bonito… Read More

Islamorada + Middle Keys

There is only one word to describe fishing in Islamorada this week. Outrageous! Having nice weather during the week my charter trips were all anyone could ask for. Photo below shows the start of the day My clients got to experience fishing for Kingfish on very light tackle in 80 feet of water. After gathering up some bait I anchored up and placed out a chum bag. Shortly after the king fish came up a chum line and it was… Read More

Lower Keys-Key West Fishing Report As mentioned in my last report cold fronts coming and going are something that we have to deal with as fishermen. The weather was great for a few days and then the latest cold front hit. The weather is once again beautiful but the departing cold front murked up the waters surrounding the Lower Keys and Key West and the pilchards, ballyhoo and the predators that chase them left for parts… Read More

Jack Dubose's Prize Catch The wind has given us fits down here the last week in the Florida Keys, changing direction from northeast to east then hard southeast. As I’m writing this, the wind is trying to die out but we have another cold front on the way, leaving but a small window of opportunity in catching fish but catch we shall! Wind or slight wind, none of this seemed to matter to the fish on the reefs, as there were… Read More

Sailfishing w/Greg Poland, Islamorada, Florida Keys Greg Poland with Will Davis of (Michigan)with his first and memorable sailfish while angling out of the Keys in south Florida. Both his Dad, Jim Davis and Will had the unique experience to encounter a double hook-up. Such a feat is rare and the choreography of two fish going where they are going to go and you on the stern of a boat requires both a great Captain in… Read More

Keys Cudas

Sitting at Greg's house, the wind kept us off the water, the cudas are active but out of reach. One of Greg's clients a while back shows the incredible teeth that make the fish so angry-looking. Read More

Sailfish in the Florida Keys
by
The winds laid down a lot in the past few days, and though I had some time off to meet with Gary last week, I could literally be fishing three clients a day right now. The rush before Christmas is something you wouldn't understand unless you experienced it. Although the Keys are very special and unique in many ways, the guiding business is the same in any serious fishing locale. At Christmastime you have a combination of… Read More

Florida Keys (with George Poveromo)

From the Publisher: Greg's Keys reports are always more than a report. We spend a lot of time talking fishing and talking life. When he called this morning and I asked what he was doing, him saying "I just shot a TV show" didn't come as a surprise. Greg's on the water in front of cameras -- or as a camera boat -- for a lot of the best fishing TV any of us have seen. Something that's always fun about talking to Greg is… Read More

Florida Keys with Greg Poland

October in the Florida Keys Fishing Report: Captain Greg Poland I've been pretty busy in the last few weeks. As you probably know I was in the World Bonefish Classic, where I tied for third place with two other people. Conditions there were pretty nasty, and I had a client with me for two days, and one day it was gorgeous, and the other was a day that I wouldn't have gone out on was it not for the fact that we were… Read More

Poland ties for 3rd in Bonefish Classic
by
From the publisher: We've been talking to Greg Poland while he fished the Islamorada All Tackle Bonefish Tournament in the Florida Keys last week. Part of the reason we were talking while he was fishing was his testing a folded net that some of you might already have some experience with (the StowMaster from Norseman Outdoors). The tournament wasn't held under the best of conditions, with 30kt winds and all-day rain much… Read More
