TOPIC: Tailing Redfish

Tailing Redfish 2 months, 3 weeks ago #22168

So I seen on TV one day (forgot the name of the show) but they were fishing for redfish in some SHALLOW water and they were actually tailing. Just meaning you could see them swimming is spots because there tail was coming out of the water. So that left a big mark on my heart and I want to find some spots where I can catch some tailing redfish.

Any advice on this? When do they go into the shallows like this? Does this only happen right before the low tide is at it lowest and they are just still on the flats? Any and all advice would be great.

I am also looking for some spots to try with my kayak. Maybe spots that can only be fished with a kayak. Again any and all advice would be great even it you just give me a rough idea.

Andrew, if you have a few bucks to spare, hire a kayak guide. You will save a lot of time learning. You will be catching fish and learning at the same time. We have quite a few very good kayak guides. Good luck!

When you see redfish tails, they are not swimming , they are feeding their mouths are in the mud looking for crabs and shrimp when you se them they are in a vertical postion.

Sam Root's image he gave me for the cover of the book skinny was the best image of tailers I have ever seen. Ken Stalos did one that is also hot, but that one for Sam is just unreal. You can hear them hissing.

If you are going to be Kayak fishing I would also suggest hiring a Kayak guide.

Derick Burgos of Phat Fish Kayak Charters would be my choice if I wanted to learn how to catch tailing redfish from a yak.

BTW in my experience the Redfish tail on the tide change. When the water is at its lowest point on the flats and the tide switches to incoming they will tail and work there way closer to the groves until the water is higher.

You are going to have to be on the right flat at the right tide. Most people will not just give this info up.

Captain Steve is right, I've seen them a few times otherwise, but mostly every time I've seen them tailing is at the beginning of the incoming. They want to push up on the oyster bars and very skinny water to look for crabs and shrimp. Also, the water has to be pretty calm to get a good view. If there is a light chop you might see some tails but generally you need pretty calm water, so look for days that aren't windy and get out near some flats where you know redfish hang out and just keep your eyes peeled

Calm water is critical for spotting them the first time, for sure. And every picture you see of really visible ones are shot without a breeze. That is good observation. I didn't think of that. Once you have seen them about four or five times you can see the wake somewhat even in slight snotty water. But only slightly. Enough snot and they are invisible.

A lot of you are new to the site and may not have read this great redfish tip from Captain Scott Moore.

Who may show up at the party if possible!

Also. You may have noticed that the site is now directly connected to FaceBook. If you read a story like this and click the Share button, you will really help us out. And share hopefully good info with your personal friends. This is a relatively new feature and can really expand our community.
