The Reel Man - Capt Betz
aving spent over twenty years as an automotive technician and then another fifteen years as a handyman servicing homeowners around the Tampa Bay area one of the main things I have learned is how to repair things and not replace them. This is something I was taught by the owner of the first auto repair shop I ever worked at in Tampa.
My mentor and the owner of the shop -- Ed Wittliff -- was a true blue German that believed in fixing things -- not just replacing them. I have carried on this belief throughout my life when applicable. Now as a full-time fishing guide this belief has helped me to keep my gear in top notch shape in an economy where saving every penny counts.
In this addition of Reel Advice I am going to show you how to service the anti-reverse clutch that is very common in most of today's spinning reels. The anti-reverse clutch often gets clogged with grease and grime, causing it to not operate properly. Often, if you take your reel in to be serviced for an anti-reverse malfunction, the shop will replace the clutch, rather than just do a simple service or repair (costing you an unnecessary expense).
