Adults mature by 3 – 5 years of age; approximate length at maturity: males – 28 inches, females – 33 inches. I have caught the same redfish 3 times in a 3 month period, so yes they are territorial. The FWC has released approx 5 million or so redfish in Tampa Bay over near the Alafia River. They have recaptured some as far south as South Sarasota. Most stayed inside Tampa Bay. Young redfish remain in marshes for the coming winter, growing upwards of fourteen inches in their first year of life. They continue to grow rapidly for the next three years, sticking close to their home territory unless pushed to move by a hard freeze, a severe salinity drop or a hurricane. By seven years of age, they will be fully grown and move offshore to spawn.
