I would not use the salmon hooks for shiners. The Kahale hook also called a shiner hook by many has been the mainstay hook for shiner fisherman for decades. Here's a photo of a Kahale hook:
The hook size should be based on the size of the shiner your fishing with. On average the 5/0 Kahale hook is the starting point. Some live bait bass fisherman now use circle hooks instead. Kahale hooks have a wider gap between the eye and hook point than circle hooks. When you go to purchase your hooks, some companies will just label them Shiner Hooks, others just label them Kahale Hooks. They are both the same.
Surprisingly we did not find any Kahales on Amazon, but we sure found a good selection of light wire hooks designed specifically to fish live bait. All told they are very popular and you cannot go wrong with a circle.
