I agree with your friend. Knots are the weakest link in your tackle! You should definitely practice the 2 you know, but you should also learn a few more, because there are many fishing applications that require special knots. Choosing the right knot is very important. You can definitely choose the wrong knot. An example would be a blood knot which is used for lines of equal diameter. If you use very thin line and a thick diameter leader a blood knot is not your best choice.
Something very important when tying knots is drawing them down properly. Knots like an albright require drawing them down very carefully and evenly. If not, they will slide right out. Albright knots also can be tied directly to wire. I would suggest you learn a handful of knots. Especially some type of loop knot to tie to your hooks and lures.
