Hi Mr Runkle,
The best bait below the Jim Woodruff Dam (the one in , would be a live shad. If you plan on using lures, Bucktail jigs and crankbaits that resemble a shad would be your best bet. According to one of the guides I spoke with in your area, the best striper fishing is from the fall through spring.
This is when they actively feed. Fish any chance you get of course, but if you fish two days before and after the full and new moons and during a major solunar period, your chances might be better. If you have some good rain and the flow from the dam increases, this will make it even better. There have been some good size stripers that come from that area.
The white bass fishing should also be excellent.
