When tossing a live bait to beach tarpon how far ahead should my bait land in order to avoid spooking them?
Dear Captain " When tossing a live bait to beach tarpon how far ahead should my bait land in order to avoid spooking them? "
Hi Mr. Milner,
On average, I would toss it approximately 2 feet in front of the tarpon's traveling direction. If I notice that day that I have spooked the first few I expand that number to 3 feet. There are days when I can put it right on their nose and they don't spook. Each trip is different with variables changing, so I adjust accordingly.
My most effective method for tarpon is actually to just find a few in an area, anchor up and chum. I put a spread of baits out, like: cut menhaden, mullet or ladyfish on one rig. A live crab free lined on another. A live scaled sardine, threadfin or pigfish on another free lined and lastly one bait suspended on a large float. I do keep a lure tied up to a casting outfit, but only toss it if all the other offerings are refused. My favorite lure is the DOA Bait Buster Trolling Model in the purple demon color (PD is the color code on the package). Let us know how you do.
