    Leaders

I personally like the Albright it's one of the smallest and strongest knots for line to leader connection. I determine the amount of leader I'm using for the type of fishing situation I'm in or the target fish I'm fishing for. But for general rule of thumb for artificials I like to use about 3' to 4' leader. For live bait I like to use 6' to 8' of leader.

For the big dogs I use a 12wt. For the cobia I still use an 9wt unless they an absolute monster.

    First decent snook on fly

Congrats on the snook! Looks like a borski slider or a qwan awesome Flys some of my favorites.
  8. Thank you for all the kind words Michael it means a lot! The pleasure was all mine that day. It was awesome seeing your family all enjoying the day and willing to stop and learn more about how we where catching the fish than just wanting to throw baits in the water. Those are the trips I really enjoy and look forward to! Here are a few pics from the awesome day we had on the water.

Anyone familiar with Cheeky fly reels?

Unless you are catching bonefish, tarpon, permit drag is not a important factor. Unless you are catching 30" fish you are hardly ever going to see the backing. Honestly if it's sealed or not not a big deal unless you plan on dunking your real for a cool photo. For our fish around here its just a fly line holder.

    Salty Fly 2014

Awesome job! It was a tough day for us. We found all sorts of fish but they were just being very spooky. We hooked one trout all day it was a big girl my guess between the 22"-25" range but just pulled the hook. So we came up with a big fat goose egg lol.

    Fly fishing

Cant go wrong with any clousers I like a tan/white to imitate a shrimp the only thing is i would tie in a weed guard if you are going to fish shallow with any grass around. Other than that tie up a little E.P. Baitfish pattern like an Olive/White to imitate a smaller finger mullet or a White bait. those two flies right there will do for some bigger trout. Lastly for an all rounder I like a little E.P. Shrimp which is deadly on anything whether that be trout snook or redfish. Good Luck out there with the fly fishing you will absolutely love it.

    Beach Snook on fly?

For my self on the beach fish I like to throw an Olive and white EP or Polar Fiber Minnow. Also an Olive and white or an All white deceiver is another great fly. For the approach use a fairly long Fluorocarbon leader like up to 14'.

    Cleaning Fly Gear?

Arti-6 I clean my line after every use. It only takes a minute but it will extend the life of your line and you will notice how much better it will cast rather if you didnt clean it.

    Paying for a charter

Phisherman813 Thats what I try to implement on my boat when I take out customers. Sure catching a lot of fish is fun but understanding how you were able to catch those fish and being able to duplicate that when you go out the next time is even better. I would say probably 90% of my charters usually consist of people that our new here or just beginning and they are wanting to learn the Tampa bay area. Though it is a little bit harder to teach when you have more people on the boat making sure every is baited and fish being de hooked lol. Also there is a group of us captains that will come on your vessel and show you how we would fish off of your boat to help accelerate the learning curve at a less expensive cost.

    Paying for a charter

One reason why a lot of captains do not accept credit cards is because we will have to either up charge you or lose money buy running your card. So preferably like Jcolby said Cash first than check second. Also 600 dollars is the going rate for a inshore charters here in Tampa Bay. My rates start at $400 for two people half a day, $600 for a full day two people.

    There's a first for everything!

There could be several reasons why you are getting those knots in your line but more often than not its from rushing your cast and getting sloppy creating tailing loops that throw knots into your line. I know its hard to relax when you got some big fish in front of you but just keep calm make sure your cast is reaching its full potential and put it to em! Though as long as the fish eats that's all that matters! keep up the good work Phil!

    There's a first for everything!

Way to get it Done Phil!!!! Those are some awesome catches for sure! I noticed the blisters on the hand ouch! One thing you might want to try to stop that from happening again is to change your grip on the fly rod. Act like you are shaking someones hand and use the same approach while holding your fly rod.

A little fly and a little trout.. LOL

Awesome job Phil! You will get the hang of it pretty quick. before you know it you will be casting at Tailers and laid up Poons!

    Flamingo

If you want a shot at Permit or Bonefish Jerrbare the best bet is go to the other coast to Biscayne National Park. Flamingo is going to hold more redfish and Tarpon.

    A few fly tying videos..

Dang I'm sorry I was not able to meet you down there but hopefully we can get out on the water in the near future and do some fishing together. Capt Dave is a great guy and awesome teacher he can pretty much do it all. As you can tell Capt Dave does a lot for the site so he stays fairly busy but I'm sure he would be able to sneak out for a day of fishing if you decide to come on up here to our Tampa Bay Waters.
