  1. I wade-fish in the ICW almost every day. Have done so for 6+ years. Sea Trout, Snook, Reds, Bluefish, Crevalle Jacks, Pompano, Flounder and Cobia are my targets. I started with Penn Pursuits. Not so good. Moved up to a Penn Fierce. Not bad, but the one I've got left I can't get at the main anti-reverse roller bearing, which is sieved up. SO the anti-reverse doesn't work. SO, 4 years ago I got my first Penn Battle. FANTASTIC! I now have just ordered my 5th 2500 Battle ll. I keep 5 rods ready, all will now have Battles on them. The Spinfisher, I've heard, is a good reel. But, for me, it's a bit pricey. FYI: I use 7' Ugly Stick Elites, 10-lb PowerPro Braid, 24" mono leader n 25 lb, and fish with Zara Spook, Jr., DOA CAL Shad Tail in white with an 1/8oz jig, and Mirrodyne Suspending Twitchbaits in Chartreuse. And I just got a 7' Ugly Stik Elite in Ultralight, using a 2500 Battle ll and 6-lb Braided Spyderwire. What a BLAST! Good Luck!
  2. HI all, I find myself having an opportunity to fish in the Naples or Vanderbilt Beach area. I KNOW that area is SO different than Venice/Sarasota/Tampa Bay! The ICW is not as accessible, Lots more development, etc. But, BY ANY CHANCE, does anyone have any suggestions for places I can get to, park a car, and wade-fish for Trout, Reds, Snook, or ??? THANKS!!!
  3. Pickgrin: Thanks for the note. I DO know that area a bit. Both of those areas are private...accessed through a gated community. I'm going to spend a little time today scoping it out in greater detail. Thanks again!
  4. HI all, A question! A friend is staying at the Rambler's Rest Campground on River Rd. in Venice for a few weeks. He'd like to put in at their site, and work/fish his way down-stream a couple of miles and take out near Hwy 41. The only good place to take out, that I can see, is at the Myakka River Oyster Bar which, for insurance reasons, won't let people use their ramp. So, for those of you who might have travelled this stretch, where IS the best place to take out? (There IS a kayak launch in the Deep Prairie Reserve Park, but it's another mile up a small creek) Thanks for your help and suggestions!
  5. I will be there tomorrow, Tuesday, 11/1, at about 8:30-8:45AM. Dropping a buddy off at TPA then heading over. My blue minivan will be in the lot, I'll have my Fishin' Buddy (blaze orange caddy) towing behind me out there wade-fishing.
  6. I was there, again, on Thursday, 10/27. 8:00AM-11:15AM, low, then incoming tide. Using Zara Spook, Jr. in the Glow color, and/or White Mirrolure Suspending Twitchbait, 10 lb Yellow PP w/ 40 lb mono leader. 9 Trout (13'-20"), a 24" Mackerel that hit the Spook, several Ladyfish and a few Puffers. As "Ahh-nold" says, "I'll be bahk!"
  7. Augiford! You da MAN!!!! I went to Cypress Pt Pk. Got there at 7:00AM, in the water by 7:10. Left at 11:30AM. 30+, yes THIRTY-PLUS!!!! trout..from 10" to 22"! About a 50/50 split between a Suspending Mirro-lure in White (looks like Sardine) and a Zara Spook, jr in the Glow color. I also got a bunch of Lizardfish and Puffers, mostly on the Mirro-lure. Next time I have a TPA runm, I am DEFINATELY going there! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
  8. Hi all. I need your help/suggestions. I usually fish Venice, Manasota and, when I'm taking someone to/from TPA, I fish near the I-275 North Rest Area, either side, depending on the wind. BUT, this time, on Thursday, 10/13, I'm dropping one friend at TPA in the early morning, and picking up another friend in the early afternoon! I REALLY don't want to drive 1/2 hour each way to/from the I-275 North Rest Area...that's 1 hour of fishing! So, my question is: Where is a decent spot to wade-fish, in greater Tampa Bay, that is relatively close to TPA? It seems there are some parks/spots along the Courtney Campbell Causeway???? I REALLY appreciate your help on this!
  9. HI all, Don't get on her e much bit...the other day, I was wade-fishing my usual area on Lemon Bay. I was using my usual DOA Shad Tail in Pearl. those flippin' pinfish and little snappers kept chewing off the tail! I musta gone through 1/2 dozen in about 20 minutes. So...what do I have in my 'caddy that I can work a bit like I do my jigs, but won't get bitten off??? I had a Mirrolure Catch 22 Jr in the Green Back/White Belly. Had never really used it. Once or twice maybe, but not for more than 10 minutes. So..I put it on. WOW! In no time, once I figured out how to twitch it (not sure if it's the right way, but I use the same motion as my 'spooks, ie walk-the-dog, style. I got 5 trout in about 30 minutes! Hmm...maybe I'm onto something here! This morning I went back to the same area. Nothing for the 1st hour or so. Then...BAM! a 22"-er! then 9 more, all over 15". I think I found my new favorite lure!
  10. WOW! Wade-fished Lemon Bay today. Started at 8:00AM, wading my "Southern Section". Winds were 12-15 mph at the start. Quickly got to whitecaps! Flingin' a combo of Zara Spook, Jr in Mullet and/or a 1/8oz white jighead with DOA Shad Tail in Pearl. Tally there...8 trout. 9" to 16". Then, to get outa the wind, which was now 20!, I moved up to my "Northern Section" of Lemon Bay. It was high tide, or had to be, what with the waves and water depth! No trout, but 6 Nice, NICE, Jacks, all over 22". 1 on the 'Spook,, the others on the DOA. People in boats, going up/down the ICW were stopping to watch/take photos. What a BLAST!. I didn't take any photos. FYI: 6.5' Ugly Stiks, 10lb PP in yellow, 25lb mono leader.
  11. That's why I put it there. To share with our readers.
  12. Here is my easy to make Smoked Fish Dip/Spread recipe. It can be made with any fish! I've made it with Sea Trout, Flounder, Redfish, Snook... Ingredients: 1. 8-10 ozs of your favorite fish, filleted 2. Old Bay Seasoning 3. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) 4. 3 Tbsp Chopped Green Onion or Chives 5. 1 Tbsp Liquid Smoke (Condiments aisle in market) 6. 8 ozs softened Neufchatel (Low Fat) Cream Cheese Directions: 1. Fillet & skin your fish. 2. Brush a little EVOO on both sides of the fish and sprinkle with Old Bay Seasoning and cook (grill, bake, fry, etc.). (Hint: Sometimes I pan fry it, skin side down, and just pull off the skin off when I turn it over, then brush more oil on that side and sprinkle more Old Bay.) 3. Place all the ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth. 4. Place it in a container and refrigerate for 3-4 hours, minimum, to allow the flavors to meld. 5. Serve with Chopped Red Onion, Capers, and a mild Soda Cracker (Carr's Original) Yum-O!!!
  13. UPDATE! Today, Monday, 12/21, got to the the ICW at 7:30AM. 2nd cast of my Zara Spook, Jr in Mullet yielded a nice 17" trout, which I kept to make my Smoked Trout Fish Dip for Xmas day. After about 2 hours' total time the final tally was 9 trout (all but that 1 put back) and 1 under-slot flounder. 7 trout and the flounder were caught on a 1/8 oz, white jig head and a DOA CAL Shad Tail, in Pearly, fished deep and sloooooooowwww.
