I agree with this seeing as how you fish deep water stuff more often. But for inshore/flats heavy drag is a waste, plus non stop casting those bigger hvy duty style reels is for the birds when doing it all day... If you are catching reds or trout all day and even a random snook, I just see zero need for 18# of drag... Hell the fish doesn't weigh that much plus it's in much shallower water. To each their own on this one, but offshore and bigger game fish is a totally different setup compared to inshore etc. one mans setup and target species is going to remain on the shelf at the store compared to the other mans style and needs. Just sayin. :-)
And by the way I would much rather take my gear to 100% of its ability and enjoy the fight than to tug a pig snook in using a wench. My two cents.

I am selling my like new Bowtech Assasin compound bow (I need electronics for the new boat!).  It comes with the RAK (Ready Aim Kill) package, custom rattlesnake wrist sling, Plano bowcase, and a handful of carbon arrows (broadhead and field point). Also included is a carbon arrow fletching tool, over 100 new vanes, a ground stake bowstand with arrow holders (for two bows) and for 40 more dollars I'll throw in a Cabelas Buck target.

I am firm at $600.00 ($640.00 with target).

I just got the Helios 35 and am pleased so far.  It brought in a nice 22" Redfish last week with no problems.  It is not as smooth or as light as the wife's Smoke, but surpasses the Fierce and the Battle I use.

I was told (By Dave R from here) that his tech said it could last forever.  Well - forever is a long time, but we shall see.  For the price (about $110.00) it seems to be a good buy.

I have found that freezing 2 liter, 1 liter and 16 oz bottles of filtered water gives me not only long lasting ice "blocks" but extra water to drink if needed.  I use just a regular igloo marine cooler and the frozen bottles last for days.  My fish come home cold and fresh and I save a ton of money.

    Just my 2 cents worth. . . .

@ Andys (I'm no tough guy - just an old crippled fisherman)I say if you are a captain you are held to a higher standard than a regular guy. If you are filleting fish offshore then you are obviously and knowingly breaking the law. Most likely so you could continue catching with no respect for the limits. I'd call that a little more serious than not wearing a seat belt! More like wanton carelessness and recklessness - for that they will take your license. I despise it when someone breaks the fishing/hunting laws. It is these I respect the most - even if I do not always agree with them. It seems as if you think that knowingly breaking the laws needs a little more than a slap on the wrist. I still say he should have lost his license - for a year. That does bring a question to mind though: What if one has a grill on board. Can one cook his or her fish on the water?I dunno what this has to do with drones. . . . . .

A 17' Whaler hull itself weighs 800-900 lbs.

You're likely to find a used aluminum Bass/Bay boat for $5k or under. My neighbor sold a nice 17.5' for $5,900 with a mercury on it. Just needed tidying up. Aluminum can be noisier but much of that can be reduced with a little work. Shoot the inside with truck bed liner for grip and soundproofing. Or install carpeted p/w floors.Fish don't care if your in a jon boat or a yellowfin.

I don't see a technical poling skiff in their future... Stability, comfort, and room is what they mainly want and a tech skiff ain't that LOLI'm goin to do some simple searches for you dude and see what type you may find yourself in.

Those are all valid questions/concerns! I would stay away from flat bottomed boats. They are crappy in any chop, loud, etc.The letter "V" can be misconstrued, most people think of a v as more of an open water boat. With a lot of v hulls they draft way more, which stinks for getting shallow, but the ride will be great for the most part as it can really cut through chop. I would look into a semi v which is v in the front but much more flat in the stern. Kind of best of both worlds to some extent. I understand about buying someone's problems, but it will no doubt be easier to deep yours and buy one with engines on them. There are a few skiff manufacturers in the state that can be had for 3k brand new but have no engine or trailer. Again, don't be in a rush and some of us on here can help your search and show you some good boats in your price range. If you don't want to post here what your real budget is for a boat, just shoot me a PM and I will start looking.

I bought an inexpensive Rapala filet knife and think it is awesome. I keep a steel handy and hone the knife frequently. These thin knives have edges that fold quickly, and frequent passes along the steel keep it sharp.I have been nothing but happy with my Rapala. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003RYI6OI/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Wow! The worst part of that is the quote: "Fishing is not a right. It is a privilege you are granted from the federal government." I won't even get started on how ludicrous that is, I just may never stop. Figures it is a lawyer, but my first guess was that he was an Obama appointed official.

You can get a lot of motor for 500 bucks. My Minn-Kota 50lb thrust was less than that and pushes my 14' fiberglass boat along just fine. Just do yourself a favor and get the salt water version. As a side note I returned two of the Motorguide motors and went with the Minn-Kota. A little more pricey, but a no worries motor in my experience. In conclusion - get something smaller that can be fed by a smaller battery. 50lbs might have you taking flight!

I just installed a 360GPH regular ol' bilge pump and I think it is going to work fine. I attached it to a very small piece of pvc pipe through the old drain hole. This sits below the water line and seem to work great in the dry test (heh). I have not totally secured everything yet, but hopefully she'll get a wet test this weekend.I'll let you know!
