Called in Sick (Brad) and I went fishing in the nearshore Gulf today between Clearwater and Anclote Key. We were followed close behind by another boat with our friend Mike. First thing we noticed was the availability of large greenback's. Two throws of the cast net was all that was needed to fill the livewell.

When we arrived at our spot in about 25ft of water, the action was immediate. There were no signs of being loaded with large fall run Mack's and King's, but they were there and biting. We also had no problem using the Sabiki rig to get large Threadfins.

Here's a pic of one of the many King's caught today between the two boats. Kept this one for Brad's smoker and released the rest. This one bit through my net and had to be gaffed.

The day was full of action including a Bonito caught by our companion boat.

Looks like Fall fishing is on!! (Finally)

While fishing a dock light in the early morning hours, I caught a snook around 36-37 inches on a top water. Luckily she didn't fight that hard cause she was close to a dock.

Right after releasing her the water suddenly erupted around me, I was surrounded by the largest school of big lady fish I had ever seen, It was the size of a football field, they were blowing up and flying out of the water all around me. I grabbed a small swimbait and stared catching them left and right then all of a sudden it appeared that something tried to eat one on my line and a second later and huge tarpon rolled right in front on my boat......that sure woke me up. I thought it was just a fluke, so I continued to fish, not five minutes later a tarpon did eat one on my line right next to the boat. I stood there completely dumbfounded staring at my reel not realizing it was dumping my spool, by the time I came to my senses the line went slack, it must have cut me off on a dock or its gill plate.

So to respond I grabbed my biggest bait a 10 mullet swimbait and started tossing it around the schools of busting fish, it didn't take long before a big tarpon followed it and swiped at it right by the boat, but it was a swing and a miss. I tried a little longer then went back to the lady fish.

To my surprise the ladies hung around and never left so I just kept catching them, when I got tired I would toss the big bait, which resulted in a hit by a big snook, but again no hook up. Shortly after a school of big jacks follow in my bait, I tossed the smaller one, but because there was damage on my line from the ladies a big one eat it and snapped my line and then they disappeared. As I came back through that area I spotted them again, but this time I was ready and got a nice one.

On a different trip I spotted a big school of huge jacks while fishing docks, when I caught up with then instead of running they hung around my boat for a while. The first one I hooked up on was big enough to straiten out my hooks, the second one just came off, but the third one, which I think was one of the smaller ones, stayed attached.

"My friend Brian Willis and I went fishing. he got his first keeper grouper weighing around 15lbs. great day.. I also caught a keeper grouper and we also caught around 10 shorts ...

Also caught a squid. all caught on the miracle jig.. Nekid Ball Jig.
Even the squid couldn't resist it.

My friend Todd, the owner of the patent really created an awesome jig.
Works on pretty much any fish. Its unique design triggers the bite.
Everyone needs to try it. Even my friends in MN.

I'm serious.. All my poles have those jigs on them.." TR

Thanks for the offshore field report Todd,

    I think it's a risk/reward type of fish Lloyd.

Getting a couple fish to the boat out of a frenzy is a well earned feat! I've read a few different things on this topic online and none have the species figured out. You win some, you lose some. I can give one bit of advice, don't go chasing the latest and greatest. Macks have been caught forever and I promise more have been lost than caught lol. That fish ain't worth a $1 lure let alone a $10 one. Keep it super simple and get the ones you can.

Headed offshore out of Hurricane Pass this morning and cruised around the 20 to 30 foot lines looking for bait popping on the surface. Took a while but finally found the bait schools and anchored up. Sabiki'd up some threadfins then started fishing. The Mackerel action wasn't a frenzy, but rather, a steady bite for hours. Most of the fish were in the 25 to 28" range, and Fall fatties. Then I hooked into a 30" weighing in at just over 6.5 lbs pictured below. The winds were around 10 to 15 with 2ft chop but the air temp and humidity made for a very pleasant day out.

The 8/28 forty four hour overnight trip out of Hubbard's Marina arrived back at Madeira Beach early Sunday morning with a near record catch:

Can it be done again? Come along on the Florida Fisherman ll as we find out together. It's always an honor to have husband & wife teams challenging the 'big boys'  on these long adventures deep into the very heart of the Gulf of Mexico.  Welcome Rick and Judy:

As we pull away from the dock the excitement level is off the chart:

Watching the charter boat 'Hub' only helps to build our enthusiasm:

First mate, Will, shares his years of experience with us. This is going to be good:

NOAA has announced a possible early amber jack closure. Let's get them while we can.
    Looking good!

The Florida's huge # 1 fish box is almost full, and we have just started:

These fish are so big and so strong. Many battles are lost; many are won:

Box # 1 is full and we are working on # 2.

It takes two to hold this one up:

Bob Dryjwoicz lost battle number one. Bob is a member of the famous SOB team. Tell you later what SOB stands for.
    Pay back time:

Hungry? Let's visit the never ending snack bar:

Judy, a real lady, gave this monster AJ everything she had. After a long, hard fought battle, the 'donkey' won this one:

Box # 2 is almost full.

The weather is absolutely Florida picture perfect:

Let's see what else is out here. Hold on! NOAA can 'prove' that American red does not exist:

Look at the size of Ed's mangrove snapper. We are fishing in  over 150 feet of water.
Barotrauma has forced the mango's stomach out of his mouth:

John Martin is very proud of his true black grouper. We see very few blacks in our area:

Notice the difference in Richard's gag:

The scamp grouper are running very nice:

Look at the color on that red grouper:

The battles have been many and hard fought. Some were lost; many were won.
Evening is one of our favorite times of day.  Watching the heavens on fire is priceless:

Are we ever hungry! It's Chef Tammy's time to shine. Our 'Jersey Girl' loves to cook; we love to eat. Talk about a match made in heaven. This is far from just chicken alfredo.
Only the youngest, most tender, chicken breast, finest cheeses, special noodles, and the richest alfredo sauce in the entire universe are good enough for this master chef:

Let's go back and take a quick look at some of the mangrove snapper we caught last night. On mangos we have no closed season and a two day possession limit of 20. Twenty deep water sized mangrove snapper is a catch to be proud of:

We have been fishing for over twenty hours. The Florida's two huge fish boxes are stuffed full of fish and crushed ice. Take us home Captain John; home to beautiful Madeira Beach, Florida. After a good night's sleep it's time to fill our ice boxes with our catch, hope we have plenty of room; we are going to need it, check on the jack pot winners, and start thinking about 9/25, when we do it all over again. A very proud SOB gang...Cliff Vandenbosch (L), Roger Poulin, and Bob Dryjwoicz, (missing is Joe Diebold) checks out our mountain of fish: Ever wonder what SOB stands for? It's not what you are thinking. Would you believe South Of Bridge gang? All four members are not only dedicated, expert, fishermen, but real gentlemen. I am proud to call them friends; we are family! Let's check on the weight of that Scamp & AJ: Nice, really nice!: Captain Garett Hubbard (L) is so proud to hand out jack pot money:
Roger...AJ,  66.2 pounds Ed...Snapper,  8.1 pounds Rich...Grouper,  19.5 pounds 'Going deep where the big boys play' Can it be done again?  Judy can answer that one very quickly:   Thanks for 'coming along with us' on this wonder trip deep into the very heart of the Gulf of Mexico. Hey TOF Crew,

Just got this near shore report from Todd Randa..

    "Hello,
I have to report on this amazing lure. Yes, I said amazing. I went fishing with 2 friends of mine about 16 miles out of Clearwater in 65 feet of water. I have fished with the nekid ball jig, but only the smaller version and was sold on it..

I kind of made an assumption that it was great for smaller reef fish, but not grouper. so I never pulled out the larger one and tried it. My bad.. Boy was I wrong. It caught 4 to one with your regular knocker rigs for reef fish which includes grouper.

Yesterday, I pulled out the large jig that was given to me by the designer of this rig and let me tell ya. I am going to go out and buy a bunch of them. I caught many grouper, and even a large Spanish mackerel.

I was chumming and got lucky enough to lure in a large school of sardines, which must have felt the shadow the boat cast was a safe place to be cause they pretty much stayed under the boat all day.

I believe the nekid ball jig was getting hit by large Spanish mackerel but those critters are hard to hook. I also free lined live sardines and set them on balloons and the mackerel were pounding them. I could watch them swoop in and grab the bait but they would hit just below the head thus avoiding getting hooked. The sad part is I could have filled a cooler with those guys, but couldn't hook them.

I know in the past I have been told a hook with a stinger works great.. Not sure, but I thought I remember hearing that's not legal.. but I could be wrong. Can someone tell me how what would have been the best way to get these guys keeping in mind they were swarming the sardine bait ball and would attack any sardine we through in the water.. Any help would be appreciated.." TR

Hey Todd, Thanks for a great report. Regarding stinger hooks, they are legal in Florida, but be sure to check your local regulations. Spanish Mack's can be tricky, try a quick, erratic jigging retrieve, the action of the NBJ will drive them crazy.
    Cheers TK
