    Beat The Heat

August is just Plain Hot! Perfect for half and ¾ day runs to beat the heat and beat the storms. Most of our trips this time of year are 6 or 8 hours which allow us bottom fish for a few hours for your snapper and grouper species and finish off with amberjacks since the opener is August 1. Recently we had the Shelton crew aboard The Just Kickin Back, for a Half Day 6 Hour. Plan was to meet at the dock at 8 and push out. The crew being on vacation from Tennessee wanted some meat to take home and to get something pulling some drag. We started the trip in 40’ catching bait this time of the year is easy mark them on shallow hard bottom and use a sabiki rig tipped with squid . Second Stop was 75’ fishing hard bottom. With the crew Using Florida Fishing Products Osprey 4000 reels using a knocker rig with one ounce weight, 25lb test fluorocarbon and a #2 circle, Were pulling up Lane Snapper, Vermillion Snapper, Key West Grunts and Porgys faster than I could keep Up. After a solid box we moved off a little deeper to some hard bottom in 80’ looking for some grouper, Seemed that day every Red Grouper was 19 7/8” but we managed to pull and few keepers out along with some more snapper. Since the chores were done and we had meat for the freezer, we moved to a set of ledges in 85’ that hold some smaller Aj’s in the 30-45” range. Once we anchored and started chumming live white bait behind the boat. It didn’t take long at all for the Aj’s to surface and pop at baits on the surface. When setting up to fish like this I like using my 8’ star rods matched with Fin Nor 7500 Offshore Series rods Spooled with braid. Tie the knot of your choice from braid to 40-60lb fluorocarbon ending with a ½ oz jig head. I don’t really care about the weight as much as I care about the hook Strength as you never really know whats going to eat your bait in the chum, be prepared for a cobia, grouper, or tuna. Free line a live pinfish down into the school of jacks and hold on! They wont pass up a pinfish most days. Federal Amberjack Season is a Tricky one never knowing when they will open or close the season. Seems like its something they are still trying to figure out. Book sooner than later is you want to get out and catch some of these fish for the grill. 2. I am finishing a bare 22 panga hull i purchased new from Panga Marine in Sarasota and would like to fish near my home in Clearwater. I like to catch founder, grouper, snapper (really anything that tastes great). I expect to launch the boat in late January or February. I have a Furuno GPS/Chartplotter and would like to buy the numbers for known public fishing spots to help me get around initially. Does anyone know a good ramp that would be close to Hurricane Pass? THANKS

    Trolling For Grouper

Do any of you want to learn how to catch keeper grouper inshore and nearshore? We are thinking of doing a class. In a classroom first and then on the water. You need a boat or you need to work with somebody who has one. The participating boats will need downriggers. It's gonna be a while yet, but stay tuned and let us know if you are interested. It is not gonna be free but it ain't gonna cost a lot, either. I can assure you it will be well worth it. If you have ever attended one of Vance Tice's seminars, you will have a taste - a small one - of what we are going to teach. Again, let us know. We will be giving you dates in the next few weeks.
  6. Pac Blue vs. Rusty Bellies ! Looks like Todd Randa is putting on a clinic with the Jumbo RG's. He has been on a Serious Roll lately with these end of season beauties. Judging from the size of those plump nuggets, we are going to have a great fall fishing season!. "My friend Brian Willis and I went fishing. he got his first keeper grouper weighing around 15lbs. great day.. I also caught a keeper grouper and we also caught around 10 shorts ... Also caught a squid. all caught on the miracle jig.. Nekid Ball Jig. Even the squid couldn't resist it. My friend Todd, the owner of the patent really created an awesome jig. Works on pretty much any fish. Its unique design triggers the bite. Everyone needs to try it. Even my friends in MN. I'm serious.. All my poles have those jigs on them.." TR Thanks for the offshore field report Todd, Nothing more satisfying than seeing the results of a great day on the water with friends and family. Cheers TK

    Fishin' Nekid

Hey TOF Crew, Just got this near shore report from Todd Randa.. "Hello, I have to report on this amazing lure. Yes, I said amazing. I went fishing with 2 friends of mine about 16 miles out of Clearwater in 65 feet of water. I have fished with the nekid ball jig, but only the smaller version and was sold on it.. I kind of made an assumption that it was great for smaller reef fish, but not grouper. so I never pulled out the larger one and tried it. My bad.. Boy was I wrong. It caught 4 to one with your regular knocker rigs for reef fish which includes grouper. Yesterday, I pulled out the large jig that was given to me by the designer of this rig and let me tell ya. I am going to go out and buy a bunch of them. I caught many grouper, and even a large Spanish mackerel. I was chumming and got lucky enough to lure in a large school of sardines, which must have felt the shadow the boat cast was a safe place to be cause they pretty much stayed under the boat all day. I believe the nekid ball jig was getting hit by large Spanish mackerel but those critters are hard to hook. I also free lined live sardines and set them on balloons and the mackerel were pounding them. I could watch them swoop in and grab the bait but they would hit just below the head thus avoiding getting hooked. The sad part is I could have filled a cooler with those guys, but couldn't hook them. I know in the past I have been told a hook with a stinger works great.. Not sure, but I thought I remember hearing that's not legal.. but I could be wrong. Can someone tell me how what would have been the best way to get these guys keeping in mind they were swarming the sardine bait ball and would attack any sardine we through in the water.. Any help would be appreciated.." TR Hey Todd, Thanks for a great report. Regarding stinger hooks, they are legal in Florida, but be sure to check your local regulations. Spanish Mack's can be tricky, try a quick, erratic jigging retrieve, the action of the NBJ will drive them crazy. Cheers TK
  8. Hey TOF Friends, Just got this report from Manwich710 Personal Best Gag Grouper caught on NBJ. "This is the only photo I have of fish caught on NBJ, but we have caught mangrove snapper, grunts and small grouper on your 1 oz jigs. This day was first morning after a full moon 40 feet off of Egmont this summer. Went out solo fished a NBJ and 2 flat lines, caught nothing but sharks on flat line, caught best personal grouper on NBJ, only hit on bottom that morning. Had a nice prize to show off when I picked up wife and kid for sandbar fun. Little cutie is my 2 year old girl Brooklyn Rose" Congrats Manwich710... Nothing better than fishing with a Little Angel & catching your Personal Best Grouper on NBJ! Cheers TK
