Green Key Cobia 10/1

Recommended Posts

Targeting trout & shark this afternoon, I managed 1 short trout and this sweet puppy.

Measured 38", 19" girth, 34 lbs and change. My very first cobia. On 50 lb mono, he took 6" pinfish 4 ft under a popping cork in 6 ft of water, 1/2 mile out off Green Key beach. Trout were short but lively.

Thanks. It was too big to bring on the yak in open water, so I muscled the fish toward the beach, got off the yak and used a short-handled gaff to get it out of the water. Too much fish for my plastic lip-grip. Pulled very much like a shark, but with less explosive acceleration.

Thanks for the encouragement fellas. I was surprised to see a cobia on my line, for sure. Mighty fine eating too! After a healthy portion for myself, my wife, and 2 sons, I put up 4 gallon zip locks full in the freezer.
