Reading the Water

This article from a local California paper tells the story of reading water that works on water anywhere in the world.

First of all, when we saw this article was from the Mantica Bulletin we had no idea where Mantica was. Nor did we know where Ripon, Lathrop, Weston Ranch, or French Camp were either. They're all mentioned on the header. When we checked it turned out they're California.

The story's charming and as intelligent as any fishing article we've read in a long long time. It features the major things you have to pay attention to if you want to learn to read water. He points out that reading a trout stream is one thing - a thing he loves to do. But the water is readable regardless of what you're fishing for and where you're fishing. Again, it's very intelligent. Reading it and taking notes for yourself will make you a better angler.

By taking fish preferences into consideration you can improve your catch significantly. Adjusting your presentation according to water conditions is known as Reading The Water.  It is often said that 10% of the anglers catch 90% of the fish and it’s amazingly accurate. The primary reason that the 10 percenters are so successful is because they have learned how to read the water. Here are a couple tips on reading the water.

The whole story - and it's worth reading (!) - is here on the Mantica Bulletin.
