The Crappy Management of America's Lakes
The people managing Lake O obviously studied in the same waterway management school as these people.
The government - in whatever form you want to consider it - has not proven very good at managing anything. It doesn't manage our money well, it does not manage itself very well, and it sure doesn't manage our lakes very well. If you know us, you know that we are major supporters of a group called Captains For Clean Water. They're a solid and estbalished organization of professional fishing guides (and other parties with coin in the game) trying hard - and with a good deal of success - to force the state of Florida to deal with the Army Corp of Engineers and do what's best for Lake O and the Everyglades and not what the Corps reads on its (washington DC based) computer models. They watch computer models while we watch the glades dying.
The same exact thing is happening all over the country. Nature does what she wants. If you build thousands of mobile home platforms below a lake on low ground that has flooded on a regular basis for the past 12,000 years since the last ice age they're gonna get wet. You wanna stop them from getting wet? You try to control the flow of the water. When you cannot, you dump it somewhere.
Read this story and see if you can see any comparison with the plight of the glades. We sure do.
From the Niagra Gazette:
During last month, nearly 126,000 cubic feet per second flowed into Lake Ontario from the rainfall, or about 35 percent more than normal.
The entire Great Lakes basin was 52 percent higher than a typical April, according to a report from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Buffalo District. The bad news is that with the Lake Ontario levels now at a record high for mid-May, rising waters are in the forecast for the next several weeks
It’s time for the blame game, as you can imagine
Critics including Rep. Chris Collins, R-Clarence, are lashing out at the IJC for implementing its Plan 2014 earlier this year. Some irate citizens and business owners have even complained to President Trump.
