The Militarizing of the FIsh
Is the Chinese navy helping support illegal fishing in the South China Sea? Why would anybody think that?
The world does not seem to be a very safe place right now. Korea is launching ICBMs over Japan, and is being managed by a nutcase with a taste for good scotch and an overblown sense of global power. There are earthquakes, hurricanse, and according to many the earth itself has a fever. From my SUF.
Illegal fishing - and the impact it has on our world's proteins - is an issue, obviously. In the South China Sea, where China is building military bases on shallow water coral reefs - this illegal fishing and harvesting of what should be global resources is itself being militarized.
This is an interesting story from the South China Morning Post about the issue.
Yes, many fisheries around the world, particularly in the South China Sea, are overfished and under threat from illegal fishing. The article implies that Chinese fishing boats are the world’s main illegal fishers. Indeed, they allege that “the Chinese government is directly enabling and [militarising] the worldwide robbing of ocean resources”. China’s boats do contribute significantly to illegal fishing but – at least from China’s perspective – not in Southeast Asian countries’ claimed waters in the South China Sea.
